Persuade your friends for Bernie
TEXT MESSAGE TEMPLATE
Hi [friend-first-name], I'm reaching out to friends about the 2020 election! You may know that I'm all in for Bernie because of issues like health care and climate change. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Have you made up your mind about who you'll be supporting?
COMMON QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
“I think Bernie is too far left.”
Politicians who like the status quo like to say that “Bernie is too far left.” The truth is, Bernie is winning exactly the people that Democrats need to win — not because he’s “more left” than other candidates, but because he’s standing up for working people and fighting for the many. This isn’t left vs. right, it’s everyday working people vs. a political establishment that’s left them behind. Disaffected people trust Bernie because he’s been consistent his whole life and stands for what he thinks is right, not just what the polls tell him to believe. People know he’s in their corner fighting for them.
“I don’t vote in the primary. I’ll vote for whoever the nominee is. I’ll vote for Bernie in the general.”
I totally understand. But there’s a real danger that if people like us don’t participate in deciding who the nominee is, we’ll get another uninspiring establishment candidate who doesn’t motivate working class people and young people to turn out, and then Trump will win re-election. We can’t afford to do that again. We need to make sure our Democratic nominee is someone who will inspire and excite millions of people.
“What about people of color?”
A recent Pew Research poll found that Sanders is the only top-tier candidate whose supporters are majority people of color.
TOP TIPS FOR TALKING TO VOTERS:
- If a person is most concerned about electability, talk about electability! Do not keep talking about why Bernie is the best on the issues.
- Remember that some people out there may not agree with Bernie on all the issues, but may be open to supporting him just because he is the strongest candidate to take on and defeat Trump.
- Don't get into debates because it doesn't persuade anyone.
